About
Department of Environmental Science, Aarhus University (AU ENVS) is a multidiscipinary department conducting pure and applied research on a range of environmental themes.
The Environmental Economics research group has expertise in economic analysis of regulation of aquatic environments. The group focuses both on the economic drivers of pollution and economic drivers of potential solutions. The innovation potential of mussel production both as a means to further develop the “blue economy” and as a means to facilitate nutrient mitigation in the aquatic environment has been a key area of research in recent years. The Environmental Economic group acts as scientific advisors to the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark.

Tasks in MuMiPro
AU ENVS leads work package 5, which aims to develop models and tools to assess the prospects for and barriers to economically sustainable mussel production. This is done by combining analyses of the private business opportunities in organic feed production from mussels and the public benefits from mitigation. Our hypotheses are that optimal investments in mussel production need to combine public and private benefits, and that sustainable business models and economically efficient environmental management need economic instruments to realise the potential.
